"In Aternum Regna"
It would then be the words remembered as our weapons finally saw rest and our nation's flag was rooted into the earth. Our nation would bloom to become what's known as no less of a utopian kingdom, one standing above the rest with not harm, but harmony.
There are plenty of happenings in The Kingdom of Aterna.
From the Kingdom District to the Western District,
The Royal Aternian Post will report on it.

The Rose Reign:
Miscellaneous:
“Black knight to F6.”A bead of sweat trickled down the back of my neck. My movements devoid of any confidence were labored, filled with the same hesitation that made my chest heave at a frantic pace. The pressure of a chess game, the sixth of this tournament, had been enough to make me falter. I knew what she was capable of, each of my moves carefully considered from the moment the referee had placed a plaque engraved with two words in front of me.{ Amelee Lovelace. }A name as evocative as it was familiar in these small competitions.---“Are you sure you’re all right, my good man?”Said a man behind the wheel of a luxurious car bearing the Aterna emblem : a Crown officer.“I know this kind of ceremony is a rare occasion and perhaps too prestigious for your kind, but there’s no reason to get so lost in your thoughts.”He stared at the young man sitting behind him in the rearview mirror, intrigued. The young man
wasn’t looking at him; instead, he was studying a chess piece: a black king.“Y-yes, I understand. It’s just that… father expects a lot from me… and…”---“White knight to C7.”Eleven moves. That was all it took for her to check me for the first time, with a pawn advantage. Her hooves clattered on the ground, imposing at first glance, yet they were as agile as her mind was sharp. Her moves weren’t perfect, of course, but she capitalized perfectly on every single one of my mistakes. Two of them had been enough.“Black king to D7.”My trembling made the steel gauntlet on my hand quiver, gift from my father on the day of my
enlistment. My pride.“Oh, really? White queen to A4.”Her movement betrayed not the slightest emotion, cautious. Her gloved hand brushed along her left braid, her permanently closed eyes fixed on my every move. She wasn’t smiling, not yet, but I’d caught her tanned lips curving for a fraction of a second.“Black king to C2.”For her, it was just a game with nothing at stake.“White queen to A5.”I was playing in the palm of her hand, and was about to be thrown away.“Black pawn to B6.”Her horse-like ear twitched, the soft jingle of her ring reaching my ears as her hands brushed off her beige shirt.“Aye, you’re really bad for a laddie who’s made it this far.”---A strand of brown hair peeked out from under the helmet worn by the young soldier sitting behind the officer. The car moved swiftly, its medieval armor initially contrasting with the modern surroundings.“I see, it’s normal to feel anxious.”The officer said, his brown eyes entirely focused on the road.“But do not doubt his majesty’s decision.”He swerved suddenly, sending the soldier crashing into the nearest door. His chestplate scared by a bullet impact, just a shallow dent, cushioned the shock with remarkable ease, a silent testament to the rare quality of the steel used to forge it. The young man readjusted his cloak, which had fallen to cover his offbalanced figure, the fluidity of his movements barely slowed by what he was wearing. A detail that made the officer shake his head.“If he summoned you, he has a plan for you.”In the distance, beyond the immaculately white clouds, stood an immense marble palace, every once understated ornament replaced by gold as pure as it was sparkling. It shone as brightly as the sun itself, the corners of the windows and doors; carved from jade in the likeness of the Crownmothers, acting as a triumphal arch: a display of the elegant and luxurious sovereign’s power.---“White Queen to A7.”“Black Rook to B8.”“So predictable. White knight to B5.”A new bead of sweat trickled down the back of my neck.“Black king to C6.”The most important piece, the one I admired the most, was about to be suffocated in the corner of the chessboard. She wore down her opponent in this slow, methodical way, every game, leaving nothing to chance.“Oi, you’re really terrible, aren’t you?”She retorted, a grin on her face.“I didn’t even break a sweat; white queen to A4.”My fists were clenched, but my movements were calm. The game wasn’t over, not yet. Pawn, king, rook, king, finally I felt like I could play.“Black queen to F7.”A very fragile feeling. She smiled broadly.“Oh, that’s cute.”Her hand grabbed her queen and moved it to F7, her cold voice tinged with a certain pleasure.“And pathetic.”My fingers clenched around my rook, a natural recapture of the queen.“Pathetic?”One turn was played.“Oh, are you offended?”Two turns were played.“Too bad.”“Black bishop to B4.”The young woman across from me sighed.“Nevermind, it’s not even funny anymore.”She moved her pieces forward, capturing mine one by one, her moves perfectly precise. When her rook delivered the final blow, one that had been decided long ago as my king slowly suffocated on the back row of the board, no expression other than boredom haunted her face.“For your ranking, you were a surprising threat. You risked absolutely nothing.”She declared before my eyes, now ablaze with a new fire. Perhaps I had lost, but at least-“Even though, in reality, you’re only good at surviving.”As fast as it was lit, she extinguished my flame. A sharp pain pierced my chest at her words. I barely managed to hold out my hand in a gesture of defeat, something she did not return.“And even that’s a stretch.”---The sound of a parking brake snapped the young soldier back to reality. He tucked his chess piece into the folds of his gaiters, the voice of his driver still ringing in his ears.“Young man, we’ve arrived.”The driver stepped out of his car, the soldier’s hand reaching toward the door a split second too late. Before he could reach it, the door swung open, and a familiar figure stood before him, hand still outstretched."Hurry up, "A slight disgust hinted at her expression.“Jeremiah.”Her hooves clattered on the ground, her skin matching the color of her hair ruffled by a sudden breeze.“His majesty is waiting for you.”The ceremonial uniform of a high-ranking military officer suited her perfectly. Its collar, made of royal blue silk, covered the lower part of her throat, her chin peeking out over the inner lining of her uniform adorned with two golden koi fish, emblem of Aterna. The scarlet stitching on her coat accentuated the golden buttons fastening her black jacket, the hint of a beige shirt visible at the exposed crease between her human torso and her centaur’s hindquarters.“A… Amelee?!”The soldier’s surprise went unnoticed, drowned out by the constant bustle surrounding the royal
palace.
The soldier’s breath echoed inside his helmet with the visor closed. The palace was… dazzling. Wealth and luxury he could never have imagined surrounded him on all sides, the carpet he stepped on in sync with Amelee more valuable than his house.[ Did I even have the right to set foot on such luxury? ]He unconsciously wondered, the gazeless stare of Amelee answering his question before he could ask it. A thrill ran down his spine; even a ‘no’ would have been more cordial. An uneasy laugh escaped Jeremiah’s lips. He shook his head, his attention diverted to one of the many paintings adorning the walls: a magnificent landscape depicting the Eastern District during Nico’s youth, before nature gave way to pomp and extravagance. The sun painted in watercolor was magnificent, the artist’s brushstrokes as precise as this style allowed.[ Ater. ]Thought the young soldier, noticing the signature on the painting. Some of these works of art bore that name, all bathed in sunlight. Most were portraits- with others appearing in reflections, but occasionally, these rare exceptions exuded a certain nostalgia, as unusual as it was captivating.[It’s a shame this artist stopped painting.]His steps slowed for a moment, his mind too absorbed in contemplating the artwork. The date written next to the signature was old, a few years back, like all the other works. The number of paintings seemed to have gradually decreased over time, their subjects appearing to be less in focus; at times, even blurred- secondary. Each subject grew less and less luminous, until the artist simply stopped painting altogether. Their last painting hung in front of the door that Amelee knocked on, oblivious to how far behind was the man she was supposed to guide: a portrait of Nico rendered in cold shades of gray, devoid of any reflection. Just below the frame, a silver plaque bore the name of the hall in front of which they stood.{ The Hall of Oaths. }“Sire, Soldier Jeremiah has arrived for his knighthood.”No words came in reply to Amelee. Instead, the immense, immaculate white door swung open
before her, two masked servants standing behind it.“Wow.”The eyes barely visible behind Jeremiah’s helmet widened at the sight before him. If the palace was the embodiment of luxury, then this hall was beyond the realm of his imagination. A huge red carpet stretched out before them, Amelee urging him to walk upon it.“Don’t keep His Majesty waiting.”With his first step, the entire hall came into view. A row of officials stood at attention on either side of the carpet and alongside numerous marble pillars, their military uniforms spotless. The rays of light streaming through a glass dome, adorned with a mosaic depicting the Crownmothers, bathed the tips of his feet as he advanced. The immense round table in the center of the room was perfectly illuminated by the dome above it, a sight that made his heart race.[What?]He slowed his pace, his steps becoming slightly unsteady. At the far right end of the room stood his father, alongside other high ranking military officers in ceremonial uniforms. Their gazes were fixed on him, a bead of sweat rolling down his spine. Yet it was not them who made his movements stiffen. At their opposite, on the left side of the table, were seated the three Crownmothers, Aternen facing a pile of documents written in ink that was still wet. Her tail rubbed one of the jade jewels sewed to her ample clothes adorned by a poncho blazer, slightly stiff.[Even the three Crownmothers are here?!]Jeremiah’s thoughts wandered, lost in the diamonds worn by Ariel, lost in the golden necklace subliming Lemon’s figure. His breathing quickened. No matter how reassuring Ariel’s presence was, how vivid the memories of her cheerful personality still were in his mind, or how deeply Lemon’s gentleness remained clear in everyone’s memory, the pressure became unbearable. The sound of Amelee’s hooves behind once again urged him to keep moving forward.[ I… ]He looked at Aternen, who struggled to keep eye contact with anyone. His heart raced once again, his mind filled with interrogation as she turned her face away from his. Instead of standing tall, she clutched her chest with her right hand, a deep sorrow etched in her gaze, hidden. Her breath clenched, mirroring her body as it took an involuntary step to the side.“Amelee…”Her glare pierced the person whose name she had just spoken as she regained her composure, a gesture Amelee returned with a savage smile. The two sized each other up in a spectacle invisible to everyone else, their animosity concealed beneath a mask of cordiality. A spectacle none could ever have guessed; a massive painting overshadowed it. Standing behind the round table, the light of the dome shone upon it.[ This is a world different from mine… ]This realization hit him like a ton of bricks the moment he stood before the immense painting. The three Crownmothers were depicted there in their finest attire alongside Nico, all four sharing a simple picnic on the beach, smiles on their faces; a scene that citizens once enjoyed. The colors were vibrant, the artist’s signature hidden in the sand.{ Gardenia. }“Please.”Amelee declared in her most solemn voice. She stamped her hind hoof like a soldier, her spine perfectly straight. The sound of her movement echoed through the hall, and silence fell as everyone realized the gesture she had just made : The Royal Military salute of Aterna.“Bow before your sovereign."A shiver instinctively ran down Aternen’s spine at this sight. Amelee’s right thumb pressed into her right shoulder, her military bearing, the empty sword sheath strapped to her side, and the few scarlet stains hidden beneath her ceremonial jacket... all made her feel dizzy. Ariel and Lemon clenched their fists at her side in a silent gesture of revulsion, while Jeremiah’s father and a few officials squinted their eyes; a reaction quite different from that of the other military officers. They all took their positions, their salutes perfect. When they traced the front of their throats with their fingernails, the three Crownmothers stepped away from the round table, their backs to the wall. Behind them stood a single velvet chair in the right corner of the room, its gilding even more brilliant than the gold stored in a chest at its feet.[ It’s time. ]Jeremiah took a deep breath, his lungs aching from being so full of air, the only way to calm his
heart. He took a nervous step forward, passing the table and the Crownmothers, who watched him go, until he stood before a single person: Nico Aternia Soft.“My most sincere greetings, my lord.”The soldier knelt with a dignity befitting a gesture practiced hundreds of times in preparation for this very moment. The clang of his armor echoed across the two steps separating him from his lord, drowning out the faint cracking sound made by Aternen’s fists as she clenched them tightly.Standing before Jeremiah, the figure in whom he had placed all his faith stood with the utmost nonchalance, not showing a shred of respect for his devotee. Total disinterest was etched on his face, the innocent crown Aternen wanted to protect now far from what he used to be.“I am here in accordance with your will, and I bow before Your Majesty.”The shadow of a pillar fell across Nico’s face, his pink hair being the only thing illuminated by two stained-glass shaped as koi fish swirling in icy hue. The tea prepared for the ceremony was untouched, as well as the baked goods with it. The sight was dull. As dull as the flag of Aterna hanging limp behind him, as dull as Nico’s tongue reflected in his wannabe soldier’s armor. Amelee took her place in front of the round table, in the center of the room.“The knighting ceremony for the knight-in-training Jeremiah is about to begin.”The audience held its breath; Aternen’s ahoge flopped. She clutched her right arm, her attire ill-suited for the sight offered to her. A feeling hitched her bones, something she could not put her fingers curved like claws on. Was it rage, or… No. This felling; it lingered into her core like rot, the colors of the worlds drained a little more each time she thought about it.“This isn’t supposed to happen…”She whispered unconsciously, the only murmur uttered in the silence that followed Amelee’s words, louder than a thousand voices. The lips of Amelee writhed, pure disdain lodged in her eyes aimed at Aternen. She quickly made sure that Nico didn’t saw her reaction, then spoke again, just like nothing happened.“Let the aspirant swear allegiance to his one and only lord and reaffirm our motto.”Aternen’s heart sank. She was unable to hold back her own whisper, this time too quiet for anyone to hear.“Our motto…”“I, Jeremiah Coal, swear allegiance to my lord: Nico, emperor of Aterna. I pledge to protect his
Empire no matter the dangers and to obey his orders without fail or hesitation. My mission is to
fight evil and uphold my lord’s word. I’ll paint the warpath crimson red before my nation’s crown is bled.”Aternen bit her lower lip, the taste of blood spreading through her mouth. Without waiting for Jeremiah to finish speaking, she left the Hall of Oaths under the worried gazes of Ariel and Lemon. Her steps did not stop until the door had closed behind her, in front of a painting rendered in shades of gray. He had changed so much.“In Aeternum Regna!”Jeremiah’s final words finally echoed in the hall, as strong as any oath.“Jeremiad.”Nico declared, not remembering the name of his own soldier mentioned a few seconds ago.
“Do you think you’re qualified to serve us?”“Yes, my lord.”Responded Jeremiah with utmost respect.“I want to be one of the names written in history when such a great empire falls…”His eyes suddenly widened, his breath accelerating uncontrollably.“N-Not that I’m saying you’d fall, your majesty…”“Oh, really?”The sound of a sword crashing to the ground rang out, quickly followed by another remark laced
with mockery.“Such confidence…”He looked at Jeremiah, not a single feeling left to spare for him in his eyes, in his condemnation.“But how dare you think that.”Nico’s voice faltered, like a feigned whisper audible to everyone.“When you’re nothing but a stray dog?”Nico slum back into his seat, a grin itched on his face.“Do you think your little rehearsals and lessons are enough?”Lemon bit her lower lips, Ariel chest pounding. They knew what Nico was about to say, or so they thought.“You are… pathetic,”Concluded Nico, his back arched toward his interlocutor.“Feremiad.”“I apologize, my lord. I was presumptuous; please forgive me.”Replied Jeremiah, his voice perfectly clear despite his clenched teeth. His body was still knelt, not moving from a millimeter despite the unfolding of his own words.“Oh? You wish for us to forgive you?”Nico’s grin became even wider.“In that case.”He held out his bare foot in front of Jeremiah’s face, his eyes crinkling with pleasure. The gesture made Lemon and Ariel tense up, realisation hitting them.“Show me just how devoted you are to me.”“Nic-”Ariel began, hesitating to reach out her hand toward him.“Emperor Aternia Soft, perhaps this is…”Nico’s lack of attention overwhelmed her; he couldn’t care less about her words. She stopped, a deep burning ache raging in her stomach. It was… She withdrew her hand close to her shoulder, unable to stand still, disgusted in herself. She was not even capable of doing it, just good enough to become once again a mere spectator.“It’s ok, Ariel.”Murmured Lemon, her hands silently supporting Ariel.“It’s ok…”Once the silence regained possession of the room, Nico’s foot struck the visor of Jeremiah’s helmet.Plac“Prove your loyalty to me.”It flipped up, slowly but surely.“Now.”Jeremiah raised his head ever so slightly. A gesture immediately crushed by the weight of his lord’s icy words.“Throw away this pride or walk away with it.”The knight-in-training hesitated. His dream, what he always lived for was right in front of him, he just had to… to kiss… He hesitated. What was this dream even worth for if at this right moment he abandoned what brought him here in the first place: his pride as a man… No. His pride as a Knight. Since childhood, he had longed for this title, he had dreamed of being called a knight, his father always behind him. Even today, he was here looking at him, after doing his best to help his son. If he gave up now, what was even the point in the first place? Where was even the Prince he used to look up too.“Emperor.”He began, a chill running down his spine. Maybe his father felt the same. Maybe the press hidden in a small corner felt it too. If at this right moment he did not stood-up, he would be worth nothing more than his armor. If he stood-up now, his dream would be forever gone. His heart tightened. Throwing all of his effort, now? Destroying the opportunity his father fought for? His teeth clenched, his entire body froze in place.“Do you have something to say?”The cold voice of his Emperor made him stutter. He looked at his father, who stopped looking at him. What was he even doing?! Pride, now? Despite the storm raging in his chest, Jeremiah took a deep breath, his only way to not puke at the slightest thought of what he was about to say.“No, my lord.”Standing proudly meant nothing. He brought his lips close to the foot, then closed his eyes. Silence rang out, long, brief. When he
opened his eyes again, only the pale, ashen expressions of the Crownmothers greeted him. Only Nico’s cackling greeted him. Only Amelee’s smiling lips greeted him, twitching.[Father-]He turned toward him, a second too late. All he saw was his jacket storming off the room, lost among the disgusted officers and officials who watched him in silent horror. Amelee seemed to be the only person unaffected by the spectacle, a mere facade. She was passionately savoring every moment of it, almost sad at the thought of handing him a tissue so he could wipe his mouth. Her fake twitching smile held back… joy?maybe even envy. Whatever it was, it was mocking him.[I…]Jeremiah’s eyes trembled. He tried to get up, only to stop, frozen in place. His lord had fallen silent once more. The pitiful look on his face- it amused the emperor, it disgusted him.“Fine. I’ve seen enough.”Declared Nico before settling back into his seat. His toes grasped and slammed the top of the helm back down, pouring his intended ceremonial tea favor to wash off ‘a dog’s drool’ from himself. His eyes pierced those of his remaining crownmothers, standing still where he posted them, and gave to one of them a casual flick of his wrist.“Ariel, go fetch Aternen.”Nico closed his eyes, the multiple hesitations of Ariel invisible to him.“As for you,”He sighed.“If embarrassment is enough to make you hesitate, you have no right to approach this place.”It felt as thousands of swords tore Jeremiah’s heart apart. Tears welled up in his eyes, his trembling barely concealed by his armor.“I suppose you can just be a gatekeeper. Amelee will guide you to your post.”At his words, Amelee forcibly pulled the man to his feet, as if she’d been waiting for just that.“You’re worthless anywhere else.”Jeremiah noticed the centaur’s body language changing in real time. She seemed delighted as she dragged him out of the room before he could react, Nico’s words barely reaching them as an echo.“And even that’s a stretch.”
A streak of mud stained Jeremiah’s once-immaculate armor. Every time he opened the palace door, he withered a little more. What had happened that day, during the ceremony, continued to haunt his thoughts. With each new morning, with each new afternoon spent in front of those cold and imposing doors, his arms lost some of their strength.“Excuse me, I’ll let you in…”He said mechanically to one of the countless faces he saw every day. During his first week, he at least tried to look at them and remember their names, but what did it matter? They approached him, showed him their Aeternian emblem or their summons, and he let them pass without a word. It was better like this. During some lucky days, no one even noticed him.
“Stand up straight, you look like a dead worm. You’re insulting His Majesty’s army!”Amelee’s sudden shout snapped him out of his thoughts. He raised his eyes slightly less lively than those of a dead fish in her direction, his voice as empty as his gesture.“Yes, officer…”“Are you sure you understood?”Pure disdain tainted Amelee’s voice. Even looking at him seemed painful to her.“Yes…”Begrudgingly answered Jeremiah, a now mere shadow of himself. He never stopped thinking about it. What he could have changed, what he could have done better, what he could… He sighed in defeat.“ After all… I’ve done everything wrong…”“Eh. That’s no surprise for someone of your kind.”“I’ve brought shame upon my father and my lineage… I’ve let them down…”“There wasn’t much to dishonor to begin with.”Amelee scoffed, bored by the words of the soldier slumped against the wall in front of her.“And I said to stand up straight.”“I’m not worthy of the emperor…”“Exactly, so stand up straight and stop dishonoring him before I teach you a lesson.”Jeremiah did his best to meet her order, his head tilted slightly downward.“I’m a failure.”Despair took over Amelee's face. Talking with this broken record was useless.“At least you realize that...”She shook her head, but contrary to her expectations, her remark invigorated Jeremiah."Oh!"He lifted his head, standing tall.“So, is that what you wanted to teach me?”Amelee’s eyes narrowed in confusion.“I’ve just come to understand His Majesty’s kindness. ”“Oh?”“He acts as he reigns.”Amelee stepped closer to him, intrigued. She had no idea what Jeremiah was thinking.“And?”“He seems stern and cold, but he always acts for our own good.”“You think so ?”“Yes. He is a ruler with an iron fist, and an emperor without one wouldn’t be worth serving. Not after decades of dedication to join his ranks.”Amelee couldn’t help but laugh, unsure whether she should be amused by what the poor soldier had just said.“Exactly. You start to understand, that’s why you have to give up your whole self to devote yourself entirely to the crown.”Sarcasm took over her voice, yet, Jeremiah looked at her with utmost respect, his eyes blazing with a new light.“Devote myself to the crown from the start? Was that what I was missing to be like you?”Amelee couldn’t help but let out a whiff of disgust escape her lips, confusion crossing Jeremiah’s entire body. Before he could understand what it implied, another guard stood in front of Amelee. She had just been summoned back to the palace. She took a last look at Jeremiah. His face semed… different. Maybe a little less disgusting? Maybe more devoted to the emperor? At peace? She didn’t knew, but passed and struck him with her hind leg, just hard enough to knock him down, but not to hurt him.“No. What sealed your fate at that moment, what sets us so far apart, is that when he ordered me to do it, I didn’t hesitate for a second.”She turned around without stopping, a smirk etched on her face.“But, it’s no big deal. I can give you an advice to help you make up for it.”Without giving Jeremiah a second to respond, she spoke again.“Once your day is over, bring some grape juice to Aternen, to apologize for making her leave. She will love it.”“Wha- what? What’s-”The soldier’s questions were cut short. Amelee’s voice cut in again."Oi."It came from so far away that he coudn't even glance at her solitary figure.“Shut it and lock the gate,”The wind whipped against the armor of the-“…doorman.”
The clamor of the thriving metropolis shattered the silence that had settled in the heart of the throne
room.
Seated on two velvet cushions placed on either side of a solid gold throne inlaid with jewels,
two young women faced each other, one of them overcome with deep sorrow.“Are you all right, Aternen?”Asked one of the two women. Her salmon-pink hair cascaded down to rest on her shark-tail
wrapped around her figure adorned in a cheongsam made of the most luxurious silk, a traditional
Chinese dress.“Yes, I’m sorry, Lemon… I was just thinking, that’s all.”Replied the second figure, her thighs exposed by her cheongsam, shorter than the one worn by her
friend: Lemon Shary.“Are you still thinking about what might have made Nico change?”“Yes… still… He was so different, the first time.”“That’s true, I still remember it.”Lemon murmured, a gentle smile on her face.“But you’ve changed, too.”At those words, her eyelids drooped. It was true; her first encounter with Nico was still perfectly
clear in her mind.
A young prince walking with Aternen, the two of us taken in one of their many
arguments.“You stopped forbidding Nico a lot of things recently.”Aternen bit her lower lip, her back slightly arched by a sudden sharp pain born in her chest.“It’s because…”Aternen’s words came to a premature end, interrupted by the sound of two doors slamming. The
king had entered the throne room. He settled into his gilded throne, his jade-green robe, adorned
with carp, slightly rumpled by his uninhibited posture.“Well, you’re both here. That leaves only Ariel.”Aternen’s throat tightened.“I already knew.”She took upon herself, a pen made of the darkest black forming into her hands as she murmured a
unique word, barely able to meet anyone’s gaze.“No.”Her pen took a full form, a single movement of her hand tracing an abyssal line in front of her.“It’s not even that, Lemon.”Her body straightened, a multitude of stars formed from the deepest abyss adorning her
silhouette.“You’re wrong.”She held out her arm, a feeble distraction, insufficient to mask the suffering that shone through from
the depths of her being.“In fact, I haven’t changed.”In an instant, the abyss spread around her, across the floor, over the furniture, across the paintings.
Over everyone she cared about.“I… I’m sorry.”She closed her eyes, unable to see the look of horror on Nico’s face.“I haven’t changed a thing.”A twist of her wrist echoed into the room, leaving pure darkness to devour them...

A sigh mingled with the sea breeze, escaped from the slightly chapped lips of a young woman. A strand of hair broke away from her light mauve hair, tousled by a long day, strangely similar to the city’s buildings to which she had turned her back. Small skyscrapers and homes blended into the hills as an integral part of the landscape, their few screens glowing with the colors of the kingdom.“For the last time, there’s no point in trying to catch the Leviathan of Aterna; it’s just a legend…”“But it’s on our flag! Aternen, how would they have drawn it if it didn’t exist?”Aternen’s cat-like ears twitched as her attention focused on Nico: the young prince of Aterna who looked sulky.“They-”Nico interrupted her, his cheeks puffed out.“You even drew it on your T-shirt when we talked about it…”"What?"Aternen stopped, confused, before sighing again. Her tail twitched, the exhausted expression etched on her face from days of discussion about the leviathan replaced by a sharp gaze.“Hey, be careful.”She placed her hand on Nico’s back as her ears drooped, his feet dangerously close to the edge of the dock.“You are going to fall if you don’t stay close to me.”“I know, you keep saying that…”Nico murmured in reply, his azure eyes irrevocably drawn to the cerulean hue of the ocean.“I’m not a child anymore.”Wave after wave rolled in, their foam crashing onto the sand of a distant shore in the Eastern
District, where tourists and vacationers flocked. A far too shallow spot to harbor the creature Nico was searching for. Wave after wave rolled in a melodious rhythm, as if enchanted by the sand of the Eastern District’s shoreline. Their breakers crashed there among tourists and vacationers, in the shallowest part of the kingdom; a place incapable of harboring the creature Nico was searching for.“In that case, put down your fishing rod. There’s no reason we can’t relax on the beach.”The young ruler didn’t answer. His eyes turned once more to the ocean, which was choppier than it had been a moment ago.“The beach?”A cloud obscured the sun. Foam began to build up on the waves, their whiteness becoming a
welcome contrast to the darkness, as fleeting as it was all-consuming. A single drop of water fell
from the sky, its reflection scattering across the already wet ground.“But…”The sun’s rays returned, and Nico’s eyes widened at what they revealed.“There!”The lighter tips of his fingers pointed at a swarm of pink fins haloed by golden rays.“Look!”He dashed to the end of the dock, heedless of Aternen’s warnings, gripping his fishing rod as tightly as his hands would allow.“I told you it existed!”“Nico, what are you doing, you are going to slip! Do you want to get yourself killed?”His excitement grew, Aternen’s words felt like yet another restriction. The line on his fishing rod
plunged into the ocean with surprising fluidity. It was dragged into the depths by the weight of his hook, a slight jolt transmitted all the way to Nico.“Oh-”* CLACK *Before his joy could fully take hold, the length of his line ran out. Panic flashed across Nico’s face in an instant.“Let go of the rod, right now!”His arms were snatched along with whatever they were holding, and his body was hurled into the salty water. The impact was as violent as it was sudden, his face lashed by the speed at which the school of fish was moving toward the ocean depths.***[ I... I can’t... breathe! ]Nico’s mind raced. What should he do, how could he do it? His hands remained glued to the fishing rod, unable to let go amid the shock and adrenaline as his visibility dwindled. His hair blended further and further into the ever-growing school of fish, the light roots of his strands, pressed back against his scalp, suddenly thrust before his eyes. The fins had stopped.“Oh, what are you~?”A tender, soothing and feminine voice drifted through the underwater currents like the song of whales.
A melodious arrangement of sound waves organized into an unparalleled tone that coursed through Nico’s body, still tense from the lack of oxygen.“I’ve never seen you among my lil' sharkies before. Did you get lost during your migration?”Her figure came into view before Nico, her pink clothes covering her brown skin- softly hued by the flickers of the surface light- finally framed by her pink hair adorned by two feline ears.
She flicked her fluffy shark tail of the same color, confused by her companion’s lack of response.“Oh my-!”Her face tensed- connecting two and two together.“You can’t breathe here!”She grabbed the hook held by one of the fins, one of her kitty sharks, and dashed swiftly toward the coast. Nico was dragged along the rushing currants left behind her- the school of these creatures dumbfounded, followed thereafter. This was the only thing his fading consciousness could still make out.* * *A violent cough tore through the shore near the dock. The tall shark-cat had just set Nico down
there, his expression still frozen in shock from what he’d just experienced- coming to realize...“The… The leviathan?”The pink lady softly signaled him not to panic- nor talk. He managed to cough out the excess with some difficulty, his eyes stinging from prolonged contact with the salt water.“It’s all right.”She murmured sweetly, and time seemed to slow with her words.
She approached Nico, wrapping her arms around his still-shaking and shocked body, his heart pounding wildly chilled by the speed at which he’d been brought back to land.“You’re back home.”The warm embrace warmed Nico, the distress lodged deep within his chest replaced by an
inexplicable feeling. His heart beat stronger, his relief evident even in the subtlest nuances of his
expression. He closed his eyes, not opening them again until the embrace ended. A truly calm moment.
The warmth vanished the moment they parted- as she would pace her way back to the shore.“T-Thank you...!”He murmured, his arm reaching out toward the distant figure, who had already returned to the
ocean’s edge, surrounded by the waves.“Nico! Nico, where are you?”Aternen’s panicked cries brought him back to reality. He turned in her direction, ready to answer
her, but she saw him a moment earlier.“Nico, are you- I told you not to wander off from me!”Aternen rushed- sprinted over to Nico as fast as her body would allow, her gaze scanning every part of his body.“What the hell were you thinking, doing that?! Listen to me! You could've gotten yourself killed, you should-”Once she was sure that he wasn't hurt, she gave it up and shook her head, her tail stiffened in the air.
A piercing view that Nico shyly tried to avert from.“That was dangerous!”“I… I’m sorry…”Nico’s faint voice replied, but Aternen paid no attention to it. Instead, she pointed her eyes and finger at him, or rather, through him- at the figure standing behind.“You shouldn’t be apologizing to me, but to her. You tried to fish for her loved ones.”“Oh no, it’s nothing, I assure you.”Said the figure with the shark’s tail- flicking the excess moisture and revealing the soft fur, a gentle smile playing on her lips.“The important thing is that everyone’s okay, including this young prince.”She placed one of her hands on Nico’s shoulder; the color of their hair could fade into each other perfectly.“If you’d like, I can even keep an eye on him like he’s one of my own when he’s near the water- I really wouldn't mind at all.”Aternen sighed, her ahoge dropped into her tousled hair much like her ears.“I…”She held one of her hands up to her eyes- responding after a rather short pause.“Only if you don’t mind, I’d like to. It’s hard to keep an eye on him all the time when he decides to jump into the ocean.”She tugged once at his ear."Especially when he ignores my warning."Nico shivered, his body tensing at Aternen’s remark.“Sorry…”“Well, if everything’s settled, let’s head back for the day. You need to change before you catch a cold.”Aternen took one of Nico’s hands, ready to head back toward the castle. Only her voice echoed behind her.“And thanks again, Lemon. Have a good day.”“Oh, you already know... my name?”The reply from the figure, Lemon Shary, echoed from the dock, sending an uncontrollable shiver
through Aternen’s body. Even Nico raised his eyebrow.“I-I… I’ve heard of you in a f-few books of course. It’s that time of year for your migration, isn’t it?”
Lemon nodded, her flopped ears rising briefly.
“Yes-yes, you're correct!”Lemon eagerly slithered to stand on the other side of Nico. She followed them, matching her pace to theirs.“You’re exceptionally well-informed. This is the first time anyone has known about our migration
this early. I know some of the feistier kitty-sharkies just hole up the hulls of ships that sail by, so, I figured no one would know of us.”“You could say that…”Aternen stopped what came so naturally, her hair shot up briefly-“Speaking of, don’t you have to take care of your fins?”“Oh, trust me. Everything’s taken care of. They're a smart bunch.”“Are you sure that-”Nico softly tugged at Aternen’s T-shirt, fidgeting. His still-wet hands dampened the bottom of the white fabric.“Do you want to let her sleep in the ocean?”“Nico, that's literally her-”“But I want her to visit the castle! I’d like to give her a tour as a thank-you at the very least.
Show her the view of the city and the ocean. Please?”Aternen bit her lower lip, uncertain.“It’s a little early… but…”She stared at Lemon, whose eyes crinkled in a smile.“I guess it won’t hurt anyone?”Nico’s eyes lit up. He grabbed Aternen’s and Lemon’s hands, pulling them both toward the palace- slightly tripping up Aternen.“Yeah! I’m going to show you everything- so we have this really cool chair and-”Excitedly Nico would drone on, his eyes widened with excitement.“Oh-! And we also need to find you a room so you can stay, forever!”Aterne's eyes twitched, her ears flickering in irritation.“Stop talking like she's some pet fis- wait, forever?!”A soft giggle from Lemon mingled with her heavily audible sigh, or to be more precise, the futile attempt to mask the smile imprinted into her lips.“Wasn’t it just a visit?”

A Captain's Dream
His boat wasn't even be fully docked before he leapt onto the land."Slow down! There's no rush!""We have to rush! History is being made!"He would tug and pull on Ariel's hand as he sprinted past the loaders- most of them looking up.
Never has Captain Soft been so energetic after a voyage. Usually these things are met with murmurs and gossip of the bickering between him and his first mate. But today was different- today he was simply beaming, excited and dancing in every step he took toward the guild. Today's the day he lives up to his title- one of the few legends and fabled pirates. A proper, fabled, navy leader.Ariel shared his excitement, yes- but she never expected him to be so ecstatic. Proud, sure- but for what they reeled in this expedition, could've been a Tuesday for anyone else. The gold of his coat shimmered in the harsh sunlight as he slammed open the guild doors- his silhouette hitting the eyes of all in it.A certain hostess dropped her drinks as the hallow sound of wooden jugs hit the ground.
The receptionist herself, dropped her pen if not for her jaw dropping as well. For just a moment, for just a mere second- it felt like they all froze in time. The other pirates glanced and went back to their simple drinking affai- wait, Captain Soft? Returning with something? Quickly even they were intrigued. He marched to the receptionist, Aternen- and smugly dropped a woven bag onto the counter. She would slowly open the bag- with the hostess, Lemon, peering from behind her as well. Was this for show? Or...Inside the back was one small and delicate star-shaped crystal, flickering in the light with its gleam.
In all honesty, crystal starfish are found everywhere- pretty common, even. However, the yield wasn't the reward..."T-This is the requested item." she stuttered."Found, captured and brought here by yours truly.""Which means... you met the requirements... y-you completed a bounty." Lemon would add."I have."Aternen and Lemon looked at each other- then looked at Ariel. She smiled and nodded- this was no hoax, no trick, no illusion. He really did it.***"-his ex-girlfriend, who was also a kraken got all bitchy and said 'it's like you're not even emotionally available'- like LADY. Just cause you're hot doesn't make it right ot be such a son of a- He's, like, SO emotional, yet here you are eating children in the deep end like it's not crazy to think..."
Ariel turned her head to glance at Nico, who jolted up in his chair.
"Are you sleeping?!"
"N-no..." He said, groggily- wiping his eyes.
"Well you better not be- I was just getting to how she ate his other ex's eggs! The audacity of this fish..."She continued pacing around the quarters spewing gossip- nearly knocking the few barrels left of grog with her massive tail.
He looked down at his jacket, seeing another one of Ariel's earrings- a crystal starfish, despite it obviously being made of low-grade opal from the dock shops. It's yet another 'at least you tried' award from his mom. We're not sailing high seas, taking down krakens and fighting off sharks- but just resolving random familial dramas on her side of the family.A smile crept onto his face, despite all this."I never want this to end."

Popular Aternian fashion brand, 'dmonbyte.', shocks people with a surprise collaboration with our very own King of Aterna, Nico 'Aternia' Soft.

Sunflower Fields
The harvest was strong and full. Golden fields writhe with exceptional crops.
Nico had been keeping a close eye on them, one too many seconds to go unnoticed.“You’ve been paying a lot of attention to them lately,” Lemon said.
He gave a small smile.“Have I?”
“You have.”She sat beside him in the grass.“With all this tending, I assume a certain person’s on your mind, hm?”He glanced away while holding his cornucopia closer. A soft blush rose to his cheeks.“Maybe, I am.”
“Maybe?”He giggled.“Yes. I am.”Sunlight moved between the flowers, making the grass shine.
Yet his eyes were still glued to his bounty- and his mother’s on his eyes.“It’s a beautiful day, even the gourds are growing out of season. It’s warm, it's perfect, it’s…”
“Tender?”He playfully stuck his tongue out at her- and a smug smile crept onto her face for a brief moment.“Maybe it is because of them.”
He leaned against her, nostalgic.
“That warmth. That kindness. I remember how it felt. I wonder if they do, too.”
“As if such a beautiful season isn’t enough of a confirmation, silly...”They sat together for a moment in silence with the flowers rustling calmly as a soft breeze blew by.
Her lips parted just a moment before continuing her thought.“Do you remember the story from before?”Nico rolled his eyes.“Why are you bringing that up now? I'm no kid anymore.”
“You told it to them, didn’t you?”
“I may have.”Lemon laughed.“I read that story to you when you were only a tiny lil' prince!”
“I-I know..”
“You loved it.”“The king was pretty cool, no?”
“The king who gave away his heart until his kingdom froze over?”Nico fiddled with an apple, seeing his reflection in its shades.“I don’t think he was foolish.”Her eyebrows rose as he continued.“He gave his people everything he had.”
“And that was the problem.” She added.
“Maybe, but he saw hurt and wanted to mend it.”He turned his head to the clear sky.“This kingdom is beautiful- I want to keep it this way, even if I can’t experience it myself.”They enjoyed this moment as the noon sun would reach the horizon.“Do you think this will last? Forever, I mean?”She leaned over and kissed his cheek- before getting up to brush the grass from her dress.“Come on, let’s get going~”Nico touched his cheek and smiled as he stood- eagerly skipping behind his mother, flickering away along with the last rays of the sunset. And a bountiful harvest was left behind.

Q&A: "Do you celebrate Easter in Aterna?"
Easter?
Of course we celebrate it!
Easter is the time to celebrate a tax tradition.
You dress up in some cute outfits and pray to the king for blessings-
in hopes of keeping everything you still have.
It was because there's two tax seasons- one in the first half of the year and one in the second half.Tax collectors would go easy on those who look more docile and innocent- accepting carrots as payment instead of money. So you'd have some old grannys or young children giving carrots and freshly grown crops to the tax collectors- which would make them turn away from them because they seem too pure.
However...
When Halloween came around, they'd give over already perished pumpkins to protect their funds- sometimes even just straight up throwing it at them! This caused tax collectors to avoid them entirely. It would flip between those two extremes, as they'd get used to people being too kind or too mean- just for them to be too mean or too kind, respectively.Of course it turned into something a little less bothersome for future generations. Now essentially we see it as a tradition to- well, me, since there's not as many tax collectors out and about. On easter, I'll dress rather 'naughty' whilst everyone else dresses 'nicely'- in order to redirect their bad luck to me. In return, on Halloween- I dress 'nicely' while everyone else dresses 'naughty', to then cycle said bad luck back. Now if you had to ask me how this second variant came to be... honestly, I'm just as lost as you- but everyone was furious when I didn't.In fact, it's a little funny to me- but I see it's spawned some memorabilia in forms of figures, standees and posters! Some citizens wanna take photos with me on Easter day, but they always look so shy when they do- it's... kind of adorable! It might be one random day in the year, but it means a lot to my citizens. I can't say no to that! So, feel free to make an offering to me during the week of it.
You never know, you may receive my blessing~

"...They have the best food ever!" - Ariel
Reporter:
"I'm honored to be able to speak with one of our very own crownmothers of Aterna. Thank you for allowing a moment of your time. I'd like to start with a rather straightforward question, how do you feel about Aterna as a land itself- living here and such everyday life?"
Ariel:
"Eee, it's so fun! All the people are welcoming and kind, the food is quite delicious and I've gotten to try all kinds of desserts... So sweet, soft and fluffy... Ehem!! Life here is peaceful but lively and warm, I quite enjoy it...!"
Reporter:
"I... feel like I need not ask, but, what do you happen to do in your free time here? Are there any specific things you would recommend to tourists or otherwise who may be visiting?"
Ariel:
"Oh oh! I think everyone should check out the locals near the beach, they have the best food ever!
As for my free time, I spend most of it reading or making art.
After all [Aterna] is so peaceful, so there's no need to dwell on problems too deeply! Reading has taken a lot of my time lately, the mother tongue is quite hard to learn."
Reporter:
"Is there anything you'd like to say for both citizens and tourists of Aterna alike?"
Ariel:
"I'd tell everyone to enjoy their life to the best of their ability! Don't be afraid to be yourself no matter how rough it gets.. and especially for the tourists, try out the tiramisu and visit the beach!!"
Reporter:
"Is there anything you'd like to say for both citizens and tourists of Aterna alike?"
Ariel:
"Of course, of course!! I hope the answers suffice, hehe!
I'll be headed to the nail salon after this, perhaps I'll get a treat on the way~"

"Try out the tiramisu and visit the beach!" - Ariel

Place of Birth: ██████
Hair Color: Coral Pink
Eye Color: Dark Hazel-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lemon is one of three Crownmothers of Aterna, as well as a Descendant of the Aternian Shark of Dominance.
She considers her position as being more of a maritime line of defense between sea and shore- as well as tending to the reefs.
She also admits to sleeping on the job for the most part.
As for her derivatives, she only mentions, occasionally, that her relation to the Aternian Shark of Dominance should be seen as something to be feared.
She considers his majesty as one of her own lovingly supports him in anyway possible.
Outside of her role as Crownmother, she frequents the reefs to check on her kitty-sharkies and enjoys watching horror films.
Deathly scared of ants.

Hello again. If I'm reading this, things have gone too far again. There’s no guarantee this message will remain the next time I void.I may not have the energy to leave these instructions behind indefinitely, so remember them now.Keep track of how he behaves in this timeline.Record what affects him and what he becomes. If the situation appears to reach its worst possible outcome, wait until the final moment before taking action.Do not let anything happen to him. Or to anyone he loves. Consider him my son.He is important to me- love or obligation it's...I know this already. I feel it.I've documented each reset I've done.
Some outcomes are the exact same while others are... far from normal.
This is one of four core outcomes I have witnessed.Seemingly when Nico is extremely close to Ariel...There was so much newer tech!
Yet also so much excessive advertising.I recall that popular idols had started becoming the figureheads of each district- and soon enough, they were eventually such a force that they rivaled even the crown's power.
At the end of each month, there was tallies of each district's popularity-
and those who gathered more funding would replace who was in power.Nico and I didn't speak much because he and Ariel would be constantly doing more and more to boost his popularity as to not lose his birthright.
Something that will always be an eventuality...
This is one of four core outcomes I have witnessed.Seemingly when Nico is extremely close to me...I remember that for some reason, the nights were getting longer and longer until eventually seemingly never becoming day again.
Though, I can't tell if this was a few days or a few years...I do remember having the time of my life, dancing and singing and performing on stage with Nico.We were going quite wild- Ariel and Lemon were enjoying themselves, too... I'm pretty sure Lemon was a bit bluish this time around. So much partying and drinking- tripping over bodies more and more, everyone must've been just as drunk.I can't remember much about it... it only really felt like an endless night...
This is one of four core outcomes I have witnessed.Seemingly when Nico is extremely close to Lemon. He seems to eventually hit such a status that everyone wishes him to be present during their weddings- which birthed an urban legend about him granting eternal happiness when he witnesses them married.Around this time, the weather seems to also be completely wrong with the season- being springtime weather in the middle of fall, with no leaves falling from trees.I believe all this romance led him into a complete melancholic state- despite being revered for it. Though he doesn't show it openly. Some would mention they swear they've seen a likeness to the king near weddings they swear he wouldn't even know about- but it's quickly debunked as a hoax. The weather worsened and worsened to a point where the kingdom itself had become uninhabitable- and soon enough, he too froze over...I can't really pinpoint how or why this happened. It's like his loneliness was his downfall...
When Nico's youth is done for, he's ceremoniously crowned as King- with us considered royalty beside him as Crownmothers.
(Despite there being no king beforehand, but I suppose they believe in prophecies...)This is the Aterna that I know.
(note: this changed from Aternia- I can't put my finger on why...)These are things that seem to never change around this time:- Nico has become the King of Aterna.- Nico has befriended a local sea royalty.
(I can't tell what his intentions are with my son...)- I, Ariel and Lemon have become 'crownmothers'.- Nico has bitten Ariel's tail in his sleep.Everything after this being established seems to change wildly...
Whenever I void back, I return to a familiar scene that has me- always- spaced out.My head is pounding and my heart racing- but before I can move, I'm always touched by a small hand. That hand belongs to Nico.Nico at this time is no king, but an heir to a throne- regardless of the situation.Regardless of the timeline, his growth from child to young adult remains relatively the same- very clingy.I've also come to realize that no matter the situation, Lemon Shary and Ariel D'la Costa will always be relevant to him. They quickly pick up the mantle of being his 'adoptive' familial figure.I haven't had the chance to dictate if they're related by blood, as the results keep changing each jump.He as a child was rather shy, but quickly became rebellious around his teens.
There are remnants of a history that no longer exists- but just the feeling is enough to remind me that Nico was once something... significant, something I was involved in. I don’t remember the details, but I know it gives me the obligation to watch him closely.Whatever he becomes, let him become- but if you feel that 'feeling', void immediately.

I would like to give a deep, deep thanks to the kind, loving and inspiring 'found family' I've acquired over the course of this wild dream of mine.
To Ariel:
At first, it felt like I was taking a gamble each time I'd bring anything up- hoping not to trigger any landmines. Then suddenly I found me and her yapping through the night about the future yet to come of both my dreams and her own. I love that almost every interaction between us is essentially canon- as our dynamic is exactly the dynamic we have in lore.
To Lemonchi:
I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but the only vtubers I knew of at the time were only the corpo ones. Had you not invited me to your stream, I wouldn't have known otherwise. You're just as cozy and kind in and out of stream. I'm always a fan of the art you make and by the gifts you give me as well. I hope I can return the inspiration that inspired me someday.
To Aternen:From my first draft of Nico, bickering about if I'm even talented enough to be a vtuber- to weeks before debut, spitballing a few ideas together.
You have been with me since day one from concept to execution- giving me your wholehearted, best support along the way. I've reached my goal because of you and I can't be any happier. I want to make you and the other crownmothers proud, eventually be something you want to flaunt. You reiterate that I've done much myself- you don't know that's because of you.Lemonchi, Ariel and Aternen- you all make me feel like a true king.
